So far the blaze has burnt out 2285 hectares.
The wind direction had recently changed from a northeasterly to south-southwesterly and was around 7km/hr.
6.28pm: A reporter says a non-stop stream of cars are heading south on the Princes Highway after the highway has reopened.
Fire crews were blacking out along Forest Road where the stream of cars were heading southbound from Forest Road.
Traffic is banked up through South Nowra, past the Harvey Norman roundabout.
6.08pm: RFS has downgraded the Comberton fire to watch and act and the Princes Highway has been reopened from Lake Conjola Entrance Road to Jervis Bay Road.
Conditions are easing on the fireground, but residents in the area of Princes Highway between Btu Road, Parma Road and Braidwood Road should monitor conditions.
The Princes Highway remains closed in both directions between Forest Road and Jervis Bay Road.
Residents have reported the return of waterbombing aircraft.
5.41pm: Heavy, yellow smoke can be seen from Nowra Hill, residents say.
Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters, RFS volunteers and aircraft are working to slow the spread of fire towards properties in the area between Btu Road and Parma Road.
5.25pm: Residents nearby Falls Creek Public School on Parma Road have sprinkler systems running on their houses, South Coast Register a reporter says.
The fire has not crossed the Princes Highway at that location. However, RFS reports the fire has crossed to the western the highway between Btu Road and Parma Road,
Channel 9 reports the southern perimeter of the Comberton fire is creeping towards containment lines.
4.50pm: Fire activity continues to increase on the western side of the fireground.
Plumes of smoke can be seen near houses and other structures near the corner of Comberton Grange Road and the Princes Highway.
An emergency warning is still in place as the fire is more than 2200 hectares in size and burning out of control.
If you are in the areas west of the Princes Highway, monitor conditions. RFS reminds residents to know what they will do if threatened by fire. If you plan to leave or are unprepared, leave early.
Water-bombing aircraft as well as Fire and Rescue NSW and RFS crews continue to protect property on Western Road.
4.09pm: Transport Management Centre spokeswoman Bronwyn Martin has told ABC that there are no diversions for the road closure between Warra Warra Road and Lake Conjola Entrance Road on the Princes Highway.
Forest Road, Nerriga Road, Braidwood Road, Araluen Road and the Kings Highway are all closed.
Ms Martin said if you're already travelling, follow the directions of emergency services.
3.48pm: The RFS advises the Princes Highway is closed between South Nowra and Lake Conjola.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area as the road is closed between Warra Warra Road and Lake Conjola Entrance Road.
3.35pm: The RFS has issued an emergency alert for the Comberton fire.
Residents in the areas of Btu Road and Parma Road should seek shelter as the fire approaches.
The fire is more than 1100 hectares and is out of control. The Princes Highway remains closed between Forest Road and Jervis Bay Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area as there are no detours.
2.45pm: Due to the impact of the Comberton fire the Princes Highway is closed between Forest Road and Jervis Bay Road. Smoke is affecting visibility.
The RFS says residents in the Western Road and BTU area should monitor the changing conditions. The fire remains at watch and act.
Turpentine Road and Braidwood Road remain closed.
RMS advises motorists to avoid the area as there as no suitable detours.
1.32pm: Firefighters continue to protect property on Western Road and slow the spread of the fire towards properties in the area of the Princes Highway, between Forest Road and BTU Road.
RFS public liaison officer Langdon Gould said aerial waterbombing and RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW crews were protecting property along Western Road.
Heavy plant are currently constructing firebreaks to protect properties on the Princes Highway between BTU Road and Forest Road.
"Waterbombing aircraft have been called in to reduce the rate of spread," he said.
There was an increase in intensity on the western side of the Comberton fire leading up to noon as it approached Western Road forcing the fire to be upgraded to watch and act.
East, north-easterly winds with gusts up to 24km/h have caused the increase in fire activity.
"It demonstrates the high volatility of the vegetation," Mr Gould said.
The Princes Highway remains open, but the RFS is asking motorists to exercise caution due to smoke affecting vision.
12.24pm: The Comberton fire has been upgraded to watch and act status. It has burnt more than 1100 hectares and is currently out of control.
The fire is moving to the west towards the Princes highway, but people at Culburra and Comerong need to keep alert.
Water-bombing continues at Forest Road. Residents report seeing four fixed-wing aircraft fly over and the reports are it is coming into the Western Boundary Road, north of Forest Road.
The is a big plume of smoke that's darkened, a resident who wished to remain anonymous said.
Multiple crews are there.
Motorists are warned the highway may be closed mostly due to smoke and visibility at South Nowra.
