Following the usual reports and morning tea (including a new year's treat of pikelets, jam and cream) 71 members and eight visitors settled down to listen to the morning’s guest speaker, Dr Fiona Simpson.
Dr Simpson is a dietitian and is Clinical Specialist and Resident Dietitian at Royal North Shore Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Intensive Care at Sydney University.
Her topic was “Dietetics - where it has taken me” and was about the research she has done to find ways to feed patients suffering severe trauma such as a major stroke or brain injury and are not able to take food by mouth.
Other research being done by Dr Simpson includes the best way reintroduce a normal diet to those who have not had a proper diet for a long time, such as anorexics, and was the case with POWs.
