The audience loved the opening night performance of Guys and Dolls on Friday, November 2. The show opened to a full house and the cast gave an enthusiastic, humorous and thoroughly enjoyable performance that left the audience smiling and many humming songs as they left the playhouse.

The director, Lerae Davison, musical director, Phil Cullen, and choreographer Paige Davies have brought this 1950s musical to life with the lead characters, Sarah Brown (Anna Smart), Miss Adelaide (Rebecca Pleasant), Nathan Detroit (Lachlan Brown) and Sky Masterson (Jeremy Kemp) giving delightful, strong and convincing performances.
They were well supported by Nicely Nicely Johnson (Steve Johnston), Benny Southstreet (Robert Wombey), Rusty Charlie (Bevan Badcott), Big Jule (Bill Douglas) and Harry the Horse (Lewis Ebejer) as gamblers, Lt. Brannigan (Jeff Jones) the persistent policeman, General Cartwright (Stephanie Foster) from the Salvation Army and Avide Abanathy (Ross Hosking) as Sarah Brown’s grandfather.
The musical numbers I’ve Never Been in Love Before, Adelaide’s Lament, Luck Be a Lady Tonight, More I Cannot Wish You and Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat were highlights of the show.
Many of the cast have cameo roles. Look out for Bill Douglas playing a very convincing drunk in the first scene, Lynn Benn as a movie star, Joe Quigley as the MC, and Michelle Whittle as a racy doll.
The Hot Box Dancers, Mia Johnstone, Michelle Whittle, Janet Kohler-Bond and Fran Devonald, led by Miss Adelaide (Rebecca Pleasant) charmed the audience with the musical numbers A Bushel and a Peck and Take Back Your Mink.
The set and costumes give this show the feel of the 1950s era and transport you back to the time of the corner newspaper stand, the Roxy theatre and the roving fruit barrows.
