Batemans Bay saw one-hundred people tie-up their shoelaces and pump-up their bike tyres to participate in a global day of action against climate change, on Saturday.
The Rise Up for Climate Change rally was initiated by the shire’s climate-change group 350 Eurobodalla, with events at the Bay and in Apex Park, Narooma.
Coordinator Allan Rees said the theme of the march was active, inclusive transport.
“The failure of national governments in Australia and the USA to act on climate change means that we have to act locally,” he said.
Mr Rees said transport made up one-third of Eurobodalla’s energy emissions and many short trips could be made on foot or by bicycle: “We have some good bicycle shared paths but they don’t link up making it impossible to ride any distance in safety.”
“Council has made emission reductions – down by 36% since 2005/06 – but the Pathways Strategy is limping along. $3.5 million has been allocated, spread over ten years, it’s only petty cash in our shire’s budget.”
