PRIVATE “Jack” Keating is now on a visit to his native home – Moruya.

COBARGO secured amongst its recruits last week Mr. M. Donovan, a native of Moruya.

AT TILBA the March to Freedom got five recruits, viz., J. Tremewan, L. Whitfield, V. Gilkes, J. Bond and A. Ashmore.

MR. H. J. Thomson has received notification that his son, Pte. A. H. Thomson, will return invalided to Australia shortly.

NAROOMA recruits who offered themselves to the March to Freedom column were Roy Baker, Clive Templeman, Jack Ritchie, Cyril Fuller and L. Moore.

HONOR ROLL. – Mrs. H. Ravaillion, of “Inverness,” May St., Eastwood, (late of Turlinjah) has been notified that her son, Corporal W. C. Ravaillion, died of wounds whilst prisoner of war in German hands on April 5th 1918.

RECRUITING. – Thus the Bega “Star”, “The March to Freedom did not get one recruit in Moruya. Well that’s not much worse than Bega.” [You are wrong “Star.” There were five recruits at Moruya. Ed. M. E.]

£20,000 is the quote Eurobodalla Shire is called upon to raise towards the 7th War Loan of £40,000,000. The Shire Council has called a public meeting in connection with the matter for Tuesday night 20th instant.

ON Sunday week a floating mine was discovered about 50 miles from Green Cape, and the collier Emerald Wings towed it to Eden where it was exploded by rifle fire. The shock caused houses to shake around Eden. It is reported that another mine was in the locality.

LATEST CABLES. – It is officially announced that Lenin has declared that Russia is at war with the Allies. The American Consul at Moscow has destroyed the codes and records and turned over the American affairs to the Swedish representative.

WEDDING. – On the 16th ultimo, the Rev. H. Conaghan celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church in Newtown, the marriage of Mr. William Lynch, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Lynch, of Mullenderree, and Miss May Veronica Gibbons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Ryan, of the Club House Hotel, Moruya. The bride who was given away by her uncle, Mr. M. Gibbons, wore a navy serge costume and white plush hat and set of white furs (gift of the bridegroom). She was attended by her sister, Miss Josephine Gibbons. Mr. “Ted” Lynch (brother of the bridegroom) acted as best man. Felicitous speeches were made by the Rev. Father Conaghan, Mr. M. Gibbons (uncle of the bride), Mr. P. Lynch (father of the bridegroom) and other friends. The wedding was a quiet one on account of the bride’s only brother, Gunner W. J. Gibbons being on active service. The honeymoon was spent at Katoomba.

REV. J. Ward Harrison who lectures in the interests of Home Missions at the local Methodist Church on Friday evening next (23rd) was 50 years ago a resident of Moruya. He will be known to the older people as the son of Mr. Harrison, one time store-keeper in this town and later school teacher at Kiora.

THE FLAG OF JUDAH. – FIRST DISPLAY IN AUSTRALIA. – At the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Hobart Synagogue last weekend the Jewish flag was being displayed for the first time in Australia. The flag was made by Rabbi Morris. It is blue and white. In the centre is a design in blue, two triangles reversed and crossed and showing six points.

The Rabbi states that a few days ago a similar flag was flown from the tower of David in Jerusalem by the courtesy of the British Government, which intended to restore their country to the Jews. This was the first occasion on which it had appeared for 2000 years. The oldest flag in existence, it has been expunged from the Gazetteer of National Flags, and its design is preserved only in Jewish writing.

Nineteen 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1917 are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms. Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au). 

The Moruya Museum houses a collection of furniture, books, artefacts and memorabilia that show the lives of ordinary people from the middle of the 19th century.
