U3A Batemans Bay has been providing courses and social activities for over 50s in the Eurobodalla Shire for over 20 years and we currently have more than 600 members. As an organisation we are unique in that every person involved, including the committee and the tutors, is a volunteer. Our tutors are members who offer their time, knowledge and interests to others, and this helps us keep the cost of participating extremely low. The annual membership fee (currently $40), entitles you to participate in as many different courses as you wish.

Amongst our many offerings are four different levels of French ranging from Absolute Beginners to a French Book Club, and two different levels of Italian. There are six exercise classes,10 Book Groups, seven wine appreciation groups, and a multitude of other activities. We also have an active Saturday Talks program where invited guests offer presentations on various topics. Courses are held in Batemans Bay, Malua Bay, Tomakin, Broulee and Moruya as well as in tutor’s homes throughout the shire.

Semester 2, 2018 begins on Monday, July 23. There are over 60 different activities being offered at a variety of venues throughout the shire. Activities are classified under the broad headings of History and Culture, Science, Literary Activities, Languages, Arts and Crafts, Recreational Activities, Physical Activities and General Interest.
New Term 3 courses include Post-Truth Society, a special course about news via the internet. In its early days, the internet promised access to vast resources of information knowledge and easy communications with other people all around the world. It was going to ensure people were better informed and more tolerant of others. Instead it has become swamped with “alternative facts”, fake news, propaganda and misinformation. Are people too willing to believe what they want to be true, despite evidence to the contrary? Join Sharon Beder, Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong, to explore this fascinating topic.
You can also explore Israel/Palestine with historian Bishop George Browning who will examine Israel/Palestine from Biblical times to the Present Day. This course provides a background into one of the longest running and most intractable problems facing the contemporary world. Israel/Palestine occupies a tiny piece of territory, but few places on earth have greater strategic significance. The course highlights the historical, religious and ideological contributors to the present and in light of them, invites participants to imagine a future that is worth investing in.
In Term 4, beginning on October 15, we offer new courses The Prism of the Sixties with Dr Merv Bendle, Giovinezza, an Italian Course about youth with Dr Jennifer Brewster, and The Wars of The Roses with Tudor Historian Ruth Henderson.
Popular returning courses in Term 4 are International Economics, (Dr Andrew Elek), An Introduction to Geology, (Stewart Needham), Kaleidoscope Science Forum, (Dr Jane Elek), Living Sustainably in the Eurobodalla, (Kathryn Maxwell) and Sudoku, (Dr Susan Mackenzie).
