There are many paddling opportunities to choose from on Mallacoota’s extensive waterways. One day the group put their kayaks into Top Lake and paddled back to their camp site at the mouth of the Mallacoota Inlet, on another day they launched from Gypsy Point to row up the Wallagaraugh River and back. The Betke River also looks inviting but that will have to wait for another time.
Bushwalking opportunities are plentiful as well. The group walking from their campsite to the Airport Bunkers on the Pittosporum and Betke River Tracks, and returning via Betke Beach, the Heathland, Casuarina and Shady Gully Tracks – 14 kilometres in all. The next day was a 16 kilometre walk from Double Creek Nature Trail to the Narrows Track and back to camp via the Inlet Track. Mallacoota is koala country and the walkers were privileged to see two high up in monkey gums on one of their walks.
Another group of Batemans Bay bushwalkers are in the Pilbara region of WA exploring Ningaloo Reef and the adjoining Cape Range and Karijini National Parks whilst a small group are travelling further afield to walk in the famous Lake’s District of Great Britain.
