Four members of the Newton family, of Nowra, were treated in hospital after a truck allegedly veered into the path of their new four-wheel-drive at Cockwhy on February 19.
Tim and Tj Newton’s caravan trip of a lifetime with their two small children was cut short just as it started.
Now, Tim’s brother Mark has created a GoFundMe page to raise $10,000 to help them recover financially.
Mr Newton said the family had experienced a tough time, but had just set off on an eight-month camping trip around Australia.
“On the first official day of their travels, not far from Batemans Bay, they had an accident that could have taken their lives if it wasn't for the brand new Ford Ranger they were traveling in,” Mr Newton said.
“Tim [Newton’s] calm actions saved their lives.”
He said airbags helped save the family.
“They still share a few bruised between them and Tim has some abdominal pain, currently seeking attention from medical professionals,” he said.
“They are dealing with absolute shock and loss and bewilderment as to why this had to happen.”
The Newtons hoped the trip would be a new start for the family after a challenging few years.
“The family have been through some very hard times these last few years and this trip was a new beginning, an adventure to re focus on the good times ahead and get ready for Tim to start his own business on their return,” he said.
It was the second head-on collision on the highway between Nowra and Batemans Bay this year.
