However, the fight is far from over for the Tuckey family.
Veronika Tuckey, 45, was flown to St George Hospital in a critical condition after a two-car collision on the Princes Highway, south of Batemans Bay, on November 6.
She has spent the past nine days in an induced coma, with head and pelvic injuries, punctured lungs, a fractured cheekbone and a broken collarbone, clavicle, ribs and wrist.
Waiting by her side have been daughters Brianna, 16, and Katrina, 14.
“Mum’s improving – she’s started nodding and shaking her head to responses, so it’s really good,” Brianna told the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner.
The Moruya High School student said a challenging time lay ahead.
“She’s going to need rehabilitation. She’s going to need to learn how to walk again, as she has broken her pelvis in two different places,” Brianna said.
“She was deprived of oxygen for 40 minutes.
“Depending on when she wakes up, we will find out what the extent of her brain damage will be.”
The family has the added financial strain of paying for accommodation in Sydney while Ms Tuckey recovers.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help cover the ongoing costs and rehabilitation.
“It’s very costly for us to stay in Sydney, so if anyone could donate, we’d be so grateful. We’re so thankful for the support and help,” Brianna said.
The sisters are counting on their mum’s fighting spirit.
“Every nurse has said, ‘your mum’s fighting very hard’,” Brianna said.
“When we got to the hospital, the doctor told us it was a miracle she made the helicopter flight.
“She’s our miracle mum.”
