Spring has arrived but surf lifesavers and the Bureau of Meteorology are urging rock fishers, swimmers, surfers, and recreational boat users to be cautious as they hit the beach this weekend.

The warning covers coastal waters from the Victorian Border extending through to the Mid North Coast and is expected to be in place for at least the next 48 hours.
A powerful southerly swell is has been forecast to build from Friday evening with peaks of between 3-4 metres likely in some areas on Sunday.
Additionally rock fishers in particular are being urged to be aware of the long swell period of between 14-16 seconds and should exercise caution when getting on and off rock platforms.
Adding to the challenging environment, high tide will occur at mid-morning on both days with southern facing beaches and exposed rock platforms most likely to experience the worst of the conditions.
It is anticipated that the swell will ease into next week while the forecast spring sunshine means large crowds not seen since the fading days of summer are at the forefront of lifesaver’s minds.
Volunteer patrols commence in a fortnight’s time and Surf Lifesaving Manager Matt du Plessis is urging the public to factor in the warning when planning a trip to the beach.
“We’re expecting quite challenging conditions along the coastline this weekend and with the onset of spring plenty of people will be out getting some exercise.
“Lots of people will head to the beach after voting in the Council elections across NSW, but we strongly encourage people not to be complacent about their safety. The warnings are issued for a reason,” said Mr du Plessis.
“Please take advantage of the technology and plan your trip; check the conditions before heading out, and as always know your limitations and don’t risk your safety,” he concluded.
General Safety Tips During Hazardous Surf Conditions:
Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves
Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags. See www.beachsafe.org.au for patrolled locations/times
Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities
Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket
