A Eurobodalla resident has warned others to beware of scammers after she received several threatening phone calls and messages.
The pensioner said the caller claimed to be from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and accused her of tax fraud and threatened arrest.
The resident reported the calls to Scamwatch, who said similar reports had been received from the area.
The ATO has advised residents to be wary of unsolicited calls and to look out for the following scam indicators:
- The caller threatens immediate arrest.
- The caller uses an aggressive tone.
- The caller requests non-legitimate payment methods, e.g. gift cards.
Recipients of the calls are advised to hang up immediately. If in doubt, contact the ATO directly on 1800 008 540 to verify.
