Police said the vehicle involved was completely destroyed by the fire and police were investigating several lines of inquiry.
"We are certainly looking at the possibility that this vehicle was deliberately lit," South Coast Inspector Angela Burnell said.
"We'd like to speak to anyone who may have seen a white Land Cruiser in the area around 12pm as we believe the driver may be able to assist police with inquiries.
"Thankfully the weather was on our side today, otherwise this could have been a lot worse."
Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue station commander Craig Mashman said the fire started in the abandoned car and spread rapidly about 300 metres uphill into about half an acre of dense bush land.
He said the area was "very smokey" and "very dry" and had concerns the fire would "jump the creek".
He said although it was not windy at that stage, he knew wind was coming from the south and was "very wary" of Mogo's position being nearby.
Mr Mashman said a property owner, whose property was adjacent to the fire, was able to help using a Bobcat to cut a fire line.
He said RFS, Forestry and Fire and Rescue crews worked together to contain and extinguish the fire before Forestry took charge of the incident.
Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
