The event was held to raise much needed funds for the more than 550 people living with motor neurons disease in NSW.
Walkers left Corrigans Cove at 10am, and headed north up Beach Road to the Batemans Bay Marina. They then turned around and walked back to Corrigans Cove to complete the trek.
This marked the second MND fundraiser in as many weeks in the Eurobodalla Shire after last weekend’s Footy 2 Fight MND Round at Narooma’s Bill Smyth Oval.
Kym Nielsen, the fundraising manager at MNDNSW, said funds are needed to support those living with the disease.
“There’s a lot of money going into research, but our association is about supporting people living with MND,” she said. “We need to be able to support these people on a daily basis until a cure is found.”
“We get 15 per cent of our funding from the state government, and the rest we have to fundraise.”
Ms Nielsen said their support was important, as many sufferers can’t get support anywhere else.
“People that are diagnosed aged 65 or over don’t qualify for NDIS,” she said. “Even the members who are eligible for NDIS don’t get the support fast enough, so we support them in the meantime.”
Ms Nielsen said it was great to see the amount of people willing to get out and show their support for sufferers of MND.
“It’s wonderful, and it’s a lovely atmosphere,” she said. “It shows those people living with MND that they’re not alone in this journey, and that’s really important for them.
“But it’s not just about that person on the journey, it’s about the whole family and all their friends.”
Ms Nielsen is expecting more than $20 thousand to be raised once all is said and done, and said it was a fantastic effort for a community the size of Batemans Bay.
“Thanks for the support, and to everyone who’s willing to get out there and helps us,” she said. “It makes a huge difference.”
