Mogo residents might be wondering why there is so much fuss about plastic-free Coles and Woolworths.
After all, they’ve been plastic-bag free since 2003.
In May 2003, Sue Wisbey approached the retailers of Mogo through the Mogo Progress Association.
The group enthusiastically endorsed Ms Wisbey’s plan to make the village plastic-bag free.
She researched alternatives to plastic bags with local and national suppliers.
She also liased with Jim Templar from Eurobodalla Shire Council and organised the production of calico bags with a local supplier.
Her efforts and that of the association, the council, and Mogo businesses were rewarded on September 19 that year, with the official launch day of Mogo as a plastic-bag-free village.
Representatives from Planet Ark, Keep Australia Beautiful and Council attended the launch.
July 2017 is council’s plastic free month.
