Far South Coast Surf Life Saving spokesman Andrew Edmunds said surfers brought the 39-year-old man and three children to shore after the family got into trouble just after 4pm on March 12.
Mr Edmunds said the man was unconscious but breathing when he was rescued.
“The father responded well to treatment on shore by ambulance and was transported to hospital in a conscious state,” he said.
A NSW Health spokesperson said the man was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital and later flown to Canberra in a stable condition.
The three children, aged between seven and 11, did not require treatment.
Westpac Life Saver 23 attended the scene.
