Batemans Bay Heritage Museum reports another break in of their external displays

On Saturday morning volunteers discovered the external displays had been broken into and the newly replaced trailer stolen, packed with items from the blacksmith shop and one of the storage sheds.

Volunteer Myf Thompson said it was upsetting when just after items stolen in the last break in were replaced, it happened again.

"It seems as though these people waited for us to replace our equipment and then came back for it, so it is pretty heartbreaking for us," she said.

"They also ruined things they didn't want, and left everything strewn outside to be damaged in the rain."

Despite having installed cameras worth $2000, the thieves crawled into the space at an angle and pushed the cameras out of the way so they could not be recorded.

"We are looking at what else we can do to safeguard our external exhibits otherwise we will have to remove them all together which would be a great shame," Ms Thompson said.

The museum's trailer was also stolen in the last break in and had recently been replaced.

Ms Thompson said it was a vital piece of equipment for their work.

"One of the things that hurts volunteers is that we got a good deal on our replacement second-hand trailer but the guys spent hours and hours making it fit for purpose," she said.

"We have an outreach program where we take items to show at different schools, so it's invaluable to the museum."

Stolen items are believed to be sold at swap meets, car boot sales, and at rural events where there is always a market for vintage tools.

Anyone with information should contact the Batemans Bay police station who are investigating the incident.
