The landslide occurred at Knowles Creek, 23 kilometres west of Moruya, late on Monday afternoon.
Eurobodalla Shire Council's director of infrastructure Warren Sharpe inspected the site and said the road was likely to remain closed for some time.
"The damage is more significant than originally thought," he said.
"A geotechnical engineer will assess the side on Wednesday.
"Temporary alternative routes for residents living west of Knowles Creek are being explored."
The council said crews were onsite quickly, however rocks and debris were still moving on Monday.
A council spokesperson said crews returned on Tuesday morning to assess options, including any opportunities to detour around the slip.
"The road is currently impassable for residents living west of Knowles Creek," the spokesperson said.
"While Araluen Road has been closed to the general public since 23 October for bushfire and flood repairs, residents who live along the road have been able to access their properties and travel to and from Moruya.
"Council will work as quickly as possible to safely re-open the road at Knowles Creek for resident access."
