Australian alternative rock legends The Living End will play at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club on Friday, January 4.
Following the release of their eighth studio album, Wunderbar, in September, the multiple ARIA award-winning artists will embark on nine-show regional tour through NSW and Victoria over the Christmas and New Year period.
The energetic three piece band has been prevalent on the radio airwaves since their debut in 1994 with many memorable hits including ‘Prisoner of Society’, ‘Roll On’, ‘Who’s Gonna Save Us’ and ‘White Noise’.
Their latest album was recorded in Europe over six weeks in early 2018 with German producer Tobias Kuhn and came together faster than any other album – a decision the band made to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
The production saw Andy Strachan (drummer), Chris Cheney (vocals, guitar) and Scott Owen (double bass) land in Europe in the middle of winter and knuckle down in the studio.
“We just took a handful of instruments and that was it. We landed and hit the ground running,” Strachan said.
“In the middle of winter there’s not much else to do there, so being locked in the studio was actually pretty productive for us, opposed to being back in Australia where it’s 35 degrees and you want to go to the beach don’t you.
“We really knuckled down and had a good focus. It’s such an artistic place to be, you can look on any wall and there’s an amazing piece of art there that might give you some inspiration. It feels really creative to be there.”
Songs on the album tackle issues in the current political climate, with ‘Death of the American Dream’ taking on discrimination and ‘Not Like Other Boys’ looking at traditional notions of masculinity.
The first single ‘Don’t Lose It’ is a typical burst of high-octane melodic rockabilly that The Living End are renown for, while it’s follow-up, ‘Amsterdam’, displays a rawer emotion.
Wunderbar marks the band’s first album since their 2016 record Shift.
It has since been described as the band’s most raw, conscious and politically-conscious offering of their career.
The band will play Ulladulla on January 3 and Merimbula on January 5.
