Councillor Patrick McGinlay says he was surprised by Mayor Liz Innes’ critique of the recent Eurobodalla Shire Council debate about state library funding.
On Tuesday, June 26, the council voted unanimously to push for higher NSW Government funding for public libraries.
However, on Friday, Cr Innes said she was “quite angry about the manner in which this was raised”.
“NSW government funds are flowing to this shire faster than ever before and this is thanks to (Bega MP) Minister (Andrew) Constance’s influence and his commitment to our region.”
Cr McGinlay said her comments were unexpected.
“I was a little surprised to see the Mayors statement, however, I understand she was concerned about the process, rather than the substance of the motion,” Cr McGinlay said.
“I’m not entirely sure why the process was inappropriate, but the Mayor has her opinion and she’s entitled to that.
“I thought it was an open and transparent means of the public seeing how we come to decisions.”
Cr McGinlay said he still supported the motion, despite Mr Constance’s argument that grants for capital works meant NSW libraries would be getting extra funds.
"In 2018, the council received a subsidy of $120,409, an increase of almost $7,000 from the previous year," Mr Constance said.
Cr McGinlay remains concerned.
“All the information I can get is that both Labor and the Greens found that Budget item (library funding) objectionable,” he said.
“I’ve looked at the numbers, and to me it seems there will be a decrease in library funding overall in NSW.
“I see no reason why that would be different for the Eurobodalla.”
