14-year-old Moruya resident Declan Cursio has received a boost thanks to the Variety Heart Scholarship.
The scholarship, which is awarded to kids with an existing talent living with a disability, chronic illness or financial hardship, will enable the Carroll College student to pursue his dream of becoming a professional basketball player.
A focused and determined athlete, Declan spends hours practicing to strengthen his skills. On top of his commitments playing for his school and in local Moruya and Batemans Bay competitions, Declan is also a member of the Eurobodalla Special Olympics Basketball Team.
“I’m thankful to Variety for my scholarship,” Declan said. “It’s great to be supported in my dream to one day becoming an NBA player and represent Australia.”
Living in rural NSW means Declan has to travel long distances to take part in training camps. His Variety Heart Scholarship will help cover travel costs.
Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT CEO, David Sexton, said the Variety Heart Scholarships help kids build on their existing talent and enthusiasm for their passion.
“A Variety Heart Scholarship can help remove some of the financial barriers which can prevent Aussie kids from pursuing their dreams and exploring their full potential,” Mr Sexton said.
“No request is too small or too specialised when it comes to applying for a Variety Heart Scholarship.”
More than 166 children have been assisted by the Variety Heart Scholarships program since it began in 2014.
