Tuross Head Women
Tuross Goes to State Pennant Playoff
On the 14th August there were 24 Tuross locals at Canton Beach – the occasion – our Grade 2 Pennant Team were playing in the NSW Women’s Bowling Association State Pennant Playoffs.
The team consisted of Denise Lidbury, Rita Downie, Lorraine Wake Rose Farrington, Jenny Madden, Sue Fahey, Averial Cox, Marg Downey and Manager Carol Williams. The rest of the travelling contingent were husbands, partners and club members who did their best to ensure Tuross support was heard by all.
The format for play was as a Round Robin played in three sections of five teams – over the first three days. The three section winners then played for victory over two days in a Round Robin final.
Tuross were in section three and played against Dubbo City, Goulburn Railway, Culburra and Glenbrook. The games were played to a very high standard and against tough competition after day 1 having played Goulburn Railway , and Glenbrook we were a couple of points behind the leader. Tuross then had a bye the second morning and after fighting all the way in the next game went down to Dubbo City. On the last day of section competition Tuross had a comfortable win against Culburra. Sadly it was not enough and our competition had ended.
We are extremely proud of the team, we are only a small club and to play against other teams much larger than ours is a major achievement. To use an expression – “ they have punched above their weight”, Tuross cam be very proud of the way they acquitted themselves and represented our bowling club and community.
We would also thank the Tuross Head Country Club, The Mens Bowling Club and those from the community who provided support to enable us to compete in this event.
Social Bowls
Social bowls was held on Tuesday 22 August, one game of triples and two games of pairs were played in beautiful weather. Rose Farrington and Fran O’Connell had a very close tussle with Denise Lidbury and Solveig Olsen – Rose and Fran the eventual game winner. The triples game was also very close with Rita Downie, Sharon Perry and Phyl Endall being victorious by one shot over Doreen Monks, Chris Roxby and Irene Martin. The other pairs game was a victory to Carol Williams and Di Challice over Lorraine Wake and Gladys McPherson. The eventual day winners went to Carol Williams and Di Challice.
Reminder to all our ladies, that on the third Wednesday of each month we are invited to play on the mens social day – put your name down on the sheet at the mens board. If anyone in the community is thinking about starting to play bowls but you want to know more about the game – come along any Tuesday at 8.45am.
