SPECIAL PICTURE. Our local up-to-date picture showman, Mr. Godfrey Hanscom, at extra expense will unreel a special film tonight (Saturday) entitled “The Flower of No Man’s Land,” in which Viola Dana, the youngest and daintiest of the truly great stars of the screen, will make her debut. “The Flower of No Man’s Land” is a delightful story of the Far West with some interesting glimpses of New York’s Bohemian set.
GRAND PICTURE SHOW. – Mr. Godfrey Hanscom, has very generously arranged to give a grand picture show on Wednesday night next in aid of St. John’s Church, Moruya. The films to be screened are to be of the best, so there is a treat in store for the public on Wednesday night next at the small charge of 1s with 1d for Amusement Tax.
SOCIAL EVENING. – The Moruya Knitting Class will hold a social evening in the Centennial Hall on 4th prox. To raise funds for the purchase of wool.
WANTED. – Recruits are urgently wanted in the Australian Imperial Force for the Miner’s Corps, to work as tunnellers. Applicants should apply to the Recruiting Officer, Lieut. Cork, Nowra.
MISSING. – Mr. H. Molloy, of Mogo, received word from the military authorities on 5th instant, just 12 months to the day of their enlistment, that his two sons, Ptes. Robert and Harry, had been missing since the 3rd of May. Mr. Molloy and family are still in hopes that the worst has not happened, but that these two brave Australians may yet be spared to return to this fair land.
HONOUR BOARD, -- The Honour Board for the Moruya Public School is well on its way and the names of the men are being cut by Mr. Ball. Some forty-one names have been handed in but the secretary, The Rev. J. A. Walsh is still seeking information re others. With some he is not sure of their having gone to the war and with others of their attendance at the Moruya Public School.
TOWN TALK. –
That his parents have received word that Private Arthur Thomson was shot in the knee and thigh and is in hospital.
That Reynard is no respecter of persons as he tackled Raynor Collett’s fowl roost the other night and out of 30 fine fowls only left our Mynora farmer what he could number on the fingers of one hand.
That friend Raynor has now lost his punch in connection with the new poultry club.
That Mr. Gus Whittaker, of Braidwood, has purchased a new 1917 seven seat Mitchell car for his day service to and from Goulburn.
WELCOME TO REV AND MRS MACARTNEY-NOAKE. – The members of St. John’s Church Of England held a social in the Mechanics Hall on Wednesday night as a welcome to the Rev. and Mrs. Macartney Noake. The Re. H. E. Lewin of Bodalla was present, also Revs. E. S. Henderson (Presbyterian) and J. A. Walsh (Methodist).
SHIRE COUNCIL. – The monthly meeting of the Eurobodalla Shire was held last week, the Councillors present being Messrs. D. Hutchison (chair), H. J. Mallon, H. J. Thomson and J. Sebbens.
The President brought forward as a special minute, which was carried, “ That the meeting of the Council tender to Cr. Mallon and his family their deepest sympathy at the loss of his wife, and that the Clerk be instructed to write conveying these sentiments to Cr. Mallon.
The President apologised for Crs. J. and H. J. Bate for their absence, they having met with an accident while coming to the meeting.
MOTOR GARAGE. – Mr. A. F. Emmott has just completed a motor garage at the corner of Church and Vulcan Streets to the order of Mr. Weatherby. The building which is the handy-work of Messrs. Colefax and Bert Coppin, is a very neat structure, the sides being composed of Poilite, a mixture of fibre and cement, and the roof of corrugated iron with a rubble-cement floor and an excavation tank to allow the mechanic to attend the underneath works of the machine.
Eighteen 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1916 are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms. Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au).
