There is one dreamer who is destined for big things in 2017.
Shanaya Williams-Schillings will head to Sydney in January as part of the U12 Indigenous NSW Schoolgirls team to take part in the Australian Indigenous Schoolgirls Championships.
The Eurobodalla Dreamers player was selected for the Echidnas squad after a successful trial at the end of last month.
It was a significant achievement for the 10-year-old, who was part of the Eurobodalla Dreamers team which travelled to Newcastle at the beginning of November for the Indigenous Netball Carnival.
She said news of her selection came as a surprise.
“In the trials, we were each given a number, and if it was called, then we played in a game,” she said.
“I only played for a little bit compared to some of the others, so I was shocked when I got the letter saying that I had made the team."
It may have been unexpected for her, but Shanaya’s inclusion in the state team was a less of a mystery to her mother, Kathryn, who had witnessed first-hand her enthusiasm for the sport throughout the past couple of years.
“She came in with three games left at the end of last season just to have a go, and she ended up loving it,” she said.
“She doesn’t care where she plays, as long as she gets on the court.”
Her skills have also shone through on the basketball court, where she has been an integral player for the Batemans Bay Breakers representative team.
Shanaya’s 2016 achievements include Most Valuable Player for the 2015/16 season, and the Batemans Bay Basketball Association Coaches Award.

Despite playing basketball for longer, she “doesn’t have a favourite” when it comes to the two.
It’s clear Shanaya has ball sports in her blood.
Not only does she play rugby league and soccer, but she also comes from a strong family of sportsmen and women.
Her brothers have played representative rugby league and her uncle, Harry Williams, was part of Australia’s 1974 FIFA World Cup squad.
