A strong southerly swell is expected to develop near Nowra by Tuesday afternoon.
Conditions are expected to further deteriorate overnight with the warning in place for the entire NSW coastline throughout Wednesday.
South facing beaches are expected to experience the strongest conditions with a peak swell of around 3 metres in some areas anticipated.
While powerful swells have been forecast, coastal users should also be aware that there will be a strong swell period of between 13-14 seconds as well. Those intending to fish on rock platforms should particularly be aware of this forecast.
NSW Lifesaving Manager Andy Kent has urged the public to take these warnings seriously especially with the rising death toll in NSW waters.
“Unfortunately this season we have recorded 45 drowning fatalities. At an average of one death almost every four days in 2016 this is obviously a statistic that is concerning to lifesavers,” Mr Kent said.
“The public should also be aware that there aren’t any volunteer lifesavers on patrol over winter, and while we do have call out teams ready to respond to any coastal emergency it will take time to get to you if you do get into difficulty in the water.”
