Special education unit teacher Guy Smith was one of a half a dozen Batemans Bay High School teachers who grew mos to raise money for men’s health.
“I looked like a bit of a fool, but it was all for a good cause,” he said.
“I’ve got a scar across my lip (from a skateboard accident in his youth) so I was restricted in what I could grow, but it came out blonde, which looked a bit weird.”
His young daughter wasn’t sad to see it go.
“I asked her, ‘off or on?’ and she looked at me and said ‘off’,” he said.
“It seems I was getting a bit prickly.”
Mr Smith’s brother Mitch, now a teacher on the NSW Central Coast, had more luck with his mo.
“He’s always been able to grow a better mo than me,” Mr Smith said.
The Batemans Bay High School team, headed by Scott Simpson, raised $635.
Currowan’s Kerry Bugden directed a nine-member team at Bunnings Batemans Bay.
Store manager, the well-named Nick Hare, said the also well-named Tony Head grew the best example.
“Tony had a personal connection because he had two friends who passed away from prostate cancer and his wife is a nurse,” Mr Hare said.
“He got the award from us for the best mo and he would gladly do it again.
“Rob Ellis also wanted to raise awareness for the men’s health cause, although his partner absolutely hated it and couldn’t wait for him to remove it.
“However, he wants to do it again next year.”
Mr Hare said he was impressed with the effort the staff put in to their personal growth
“It was great to be a part of it and to see so many get involved,” he said.
“Going by the effort this year, I think it will double next year.”
Currowan’s Nathan Ladmore was part of a team called EuroModalla Chopper Bros which included a woman, fellow Eurobodalla Shire Council employee Gillian Kearney, who drew on a moustache.
The team aimed at raising $1000, but got $1155 instead.
“We thought it would be a stretch getting $1000 so we are pretty happy with what we raised,” Mr Ladmore said.
He raised $350, and had no shortage of motivation.
“The men’s suicide stats are horrendous, and Movember does great stuff with the money,” he said.
However, the future of his mo is not clear.
“I’ve grow attached to it after 30 days, but my wife would be happy to see it go,” Mr Ladmore said.
“It is getting more white hairs, so I could get confused with Father Christmas.
