James Hamilton, 18, of Moruya, won the open bull riding against 25 riders from all over NSW, on board the Moruya-bred bull Poppa Top.
On January 7 he was thrown and trampled at the Picton Rodeo, and the bull’s hoof sliced his throat perilously close to his jugular.
“I just had to overcome the fact you have to get over your injuries,” he said after Saturday’s win.
“My stitches are out but I still have a mad scar.”
Saturday’s winning ride did not all go smoothly.
“He still turned back and gave me a horn up my backside and ripped my jeans a bit,” Mr Hamilton said.
“But it was a bloody good comeback. I won it on 82 points, a really high score.
“Everyone said that was the best thing, coming back and winning the event, first ride back. Everyone said I had a lot of gravel in my gut, and that meant a lot to me.”
Mr Hamilton will contest the Tarago Rodeo this weekend.
