Council has voted to advocate national and state bans on single-use plastic bags; seek to eliminate their use of at council activities or on council land; and promote community actions already reducing their use.
Australians use over four billion single-use plastic bags each year; ten million per day, or 20,000 tonnes.
Cr Mayne said responsibly disposed of plastic bags end up as landfill, taking up valuable space, but other plastic bags end up in the environment where they can cause great harm to bird life and marine life.
He said council had been working with volunteers on a Eurobodalla ‘Boomerang Bags’ project which would see reusable bags distributed and reused throughout the region.
