Interested parties are invited to address the key question: ‘Is council spending your money on the right things? If not, what should we change?’
The Citizens’ Jury – comprised of 24 randomly selected members of the community – is independently facilitated by the not-for-profit research organisation newDemocracy Foundation to review the range and level of council services.
“We know citizens get a bit cynical about making submissions to any part of government because we think the answer has already secretly been made,” newDemocracy Foundation executive director Iain Walker said.
“So instead we ask people to make their case to 24 people just like them who we have picked at random.
“People can be confident that they will get a fair hearing from a group keen to learn from other locals,” he said.
The call for submissions follows the success of the first Citizens’ Jury meeting on Saturday, September 17.
The granting of the time extension reinforced the importance of the submission process.
Eurobodalla Shire Council general manager Catherine Dale said the jury was made up of “everyday people” who would provide direct input and recommendations on how the community would like council to allocate resources.
“With that in mind, I’d encourage all community members with an issue to raise, or perhaps with a point to add to a current submission, to have their say by making a submission,” Dr Dale said.
“What the jury recommends based on the submissions they receive could make a real difference to the services in our community,” she said.
