The show officially opens with poetry readings, at 11am on Sunday, May 21 and will feature a ‘fire forum’ on from 11am on Saturday, May 27. The forum features speakers Judee Bryant, Sharon Field and Vic Jurskis.
For me a dead or decaying plant or animal is just as much an object of beauty as it was at full maturity.
- Sharon Field
Ms Bryant is a long standing member of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and captain of the South Durras Brigade and will talk about the aims of the service in general and her brigade in particular.
Ms Field is captain of the Burra brigade and will discus innovative projects they have begun for found raising and interesting more people in care for the bush.
In her blog, Ms Field explains what she draws and paints, and why:
“Most people record the image of plants and animals at their peak. My focus has been a little different with subjects chosen for what they have been through. Plants and animals remain environmentally significant as they change, decay and disintegrate. For me a dead or decaying plant or animal is just as much an object of beauty as it was at full maturity.”
Mr Jurskis, author of Firestick Ecology: Fairdinkum Science in Plain Language, is interested in the nature of forests and their management through fire. Like Bill Gammage, he talks of Aboriginal people burning the country over thousands of years to maintain balance.
The exhibition Oh, Innocent Flame is open from 10am to 4pm, May 20 to 28, at the Durras Progress Hall, Cnr of Corilla and Banyanda Streets, Durras.
