Ayers and her teammates Alexandra Viney, Thomas Birtwhistle, James Talbot, and Coxswain Renae Domaschenz, finished fourth in Final A on Sunday afternoon in a time of 7:34.73, just seven seconds behind third-placed France.
Great Britain won the gold medal in a time of 7:09.08, and the United States finished second in 7:20.13.
The British are the gold standard in the event, and hold a world-best time of 6:49.24 set two years ago in Austria. They led the race from start to finish.
In fact, the race was very linear, as there were no lead changes after the first 200 metres of the race.
Italy finished fifth and Israel finished sixth.
The Aussies were forced to do it the hard way after a second-placed finish in their heat on Friday, forced to go through a Repechage on Saturday.
They won that Repechage in a time faster than Great Britain's gold-medal time, but that doesn't take into account the difference in conditions at the Sea Forest Waterway.
Well done Nikki, we all couldn't be prouder!
