Among other things, Phillip has been heavily involved with the Broulee Soccer Club for many years. He is a life member, and was the treasurer of the club until his retirement.
In addition to Phillip’s award, young athlete Jaylah Hancock-Cameron was named the junior citizen of the year following an impressive 12 months that included a silver medal at the Youth Olympics in Argentina.
She brought a large contingent of family with her to the ceremony, including her mum Leanne, her grandparents Julie and Bob, her auntie Mel, and her athletics coach Andae Kalemusic.
Jaylah said it was “really nice to know” the community valued her achivements.
“It was a real honour to accept one of the awards from Rotary, because they’ve done so much for me over the past year,” she said. “They’ve helped my mum get me to Vanuatu and Argentina with a bit of donated money.”
Jaylah said she only found out about the award a few days before the ceremony, and described it as a “bit of a surprise”.
