Moruya’s “funky little festival” is back for 2016 and if there’s anyone most excited for Granite Town, it is headline act Kim Churchill.
Hailing from the Far South Coast town of Merimbula, Kim recalls fond memories from his early career in Moruya as a humble market busker.
“Moruya is one of the most important towns in my entire career,” the 25-year-old musician said.
“I busked at Moruya Markets every Saturday for two and a half years. So coming back to Moruya to play is a very exciting moment.”
Kim used these early gigs to “figure out how I was going to perform my music and bring my art to the world”.
“It was my training ground,” he said.
Even after taking his music around the world, Moruya remains one of Kim’s favourite places to play.
After starting out on the South Coast music scene in his teenage years, Kim says he is thrilled to see a festival of this nature hosted in Moruya.
Moruya is one of the most important towns in my entire career ... The youth have starved for these kinds of events.

“The youth have starved for these kinds of events,” he said.
“It’s great that this kind of thing is being put on.”
With his fifth album currently in the works, Kim is looking forward to giving audiences a taste of his latest music at the festival.
He said audiences can expect a more bass-heavy, acoustic-pop sound with his new tunes.
“What I’ve done so far is quite raw and loose,” he said.
“With the new album, I’ve tightened things up a bit.”
Other acts on the blues/funk/jazz line-up include Ash Grunwald, OKA and Tash Sultana.
The Granite Town festival will be held on October 28, 29 and 30 at Riverside Park, Moruya. Festival organisers are promising a colourful weekend of music, food and culture.
Discount early bird tickets are on sale until September 19 at www.granitetownfest.com.au or at The Rustic Pantry, Vulcan St, Moruya for $100 or $90 concession.
