The old Batemans Bay Bowling Club was closed in March, 2013, by Club Catalina, and the site has essentially sat empty since then.
The Eurobodalla Shire Council bought the property in 2016 for $2.7 million, and then leased the site to Roads and Maritime Services (now Transport for NSW) for three years in July, 2018, with an option to extend for a further year.
In that time, the site has been used as an Infrastructure Skills Legacy Training Hub that officially opened in February, 2019, to train workers labouring on the Batemans Bay Bridge project.
The site also included a temporary office, and storage space for vehicles, materials, and equipment.
The old club was demolished shortly after RMS' lease was confirmed.
Eurobodalla Shire Council then sought expressions of interest from developers in June, 2021, in anticipation of the expiring lease this July.
At the time, a Council spokesperson said they were "aware of a number of companies interested in the site following an expression of interested process late in 2016".
However, the spokesperson has since confirmed there were no "suitable" responses to that process.
"No suitable responses were received to the 2021 EOI," they said.
"Council continues to seek suitable interest and will be undertaking a further process seeking interest.
"Interest in the site and its future use will be a matter of consideration and determination by the Council."
As for the future use, Council does have a preferred use for the site.
"Council, after engaging with the community, identified the preferred future uses as tourist accommodation, conference facilities, restaurants and cafes, and residential accommodation," the spokesperson said.
