Just one week before the caretaker period was due to start, NSW Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock confirmed the election date would be pushed back from September 4 to December 4 for all NSW councils.
Eurobodalla Council confirmed the current council would continue to hold meetings over the next three months before a caretaker period would start on Friday, November 6.
"We are currently finalising a revised meeting schedule but expect to hold meetings in August, September and October," a council spokesperson said.
"A report on this matter will be presented to tomorrow's council meeting [27 July] for adoption by council."
The first meeting of the new council is expected to be held in late January or early February, 2022.
Councillor Anthony Mayne will contest the next election and said the delay was to keep everyone safe.
"I think it's disappointing the elections have been postponed, but it gives candidates a little bit more time to share their views and engage with the community," he said.
"But this council should not be making any more of those big decisions like the Dalmeny land sale and should look to the community for guidance during the next 12 weeks."
Labor for Eurobodalla mayoral candidate David Grace said although he understood the reason for the delay, he did not want the current council to make major decisions affecting the next.
"We're disappointed we can't provide to the community an invigorated, active, knowledgeable council as soon as planned," he said.
"We will be pushing very hard for the existing council to only make routine decisions, not things that are going to carry over and affect the next council."
Advance Eurobodalla mayoral candidate Mat Hatcher agreed, but said it was important for the current council to keep going until the caretaker period.
"We can't have three months of council doing nothing. The councillors have gone through a lot in their already postponed term and I hope none of them have checked out," he said.
"It's pretty clear to us the community wants to see a big change, and hopefully the current councillors do not start grandstanding and take this opportunity to listen to what the community wants."
Nominations for council will now open on Monday, October 25 and close on Wednesday, November 3.
