The former PGA Championship winner was confirmed as captain on Tuesday by organisers and the PGA Tour, having led the US to one win and one loss in the Ryder Cup against Europe.
Tiger Woods was playing captain when the US defeated the rest of the world in the last Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 2019.
Woods called Love to inform him he was the new captain.
"He just said, 'Hey, congratulations. You're going to be the next Presidents Cup captain'," Love said.
The 56-year-old becomes the ninth captain of the team since the competition was established in 1994.
"It's a tremendous honour," Love said.
The coronavirus pandemic delayed the Presidents Cup by a year. It will now take place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina in September 2022.
South Africa's Trevor Immelman will captain the International Team, which is the rest of the world excluding Europe.
