Police said the man electronically transferred a large amount of money to a fraudulent company online.
A police spokesman said the man attempted to purchase a motor home through what he believed was a legitimate company with a professional website.
"Unfortunately, this was all part of the fraud and the vehicle used in the fraud was never for sale - he never received the vehicle," the police spokesman said.
It is understood the scam was based overseas.
The police spokesman said the vehicle had been used in three similar scams in NSW and a number of scams in Queensland.
"Anyone purchasing online needs to be 100 percent sure of the company and person they are dealing with - especially when there's large amounts of money involved," the spokesman said.
Investigations were continuing and police were in contact with financial institutions involved, hoping to recover some of the money.

At about 2.20pm, police said a Toyota Hilux heading south slowed on the Princes Highway to turn right into a property.
"A Mitsubishi Challenger towing a trailer stopped behind the Hilux," the police spokesman said.
