WEEKEND ROUNDUP - For 19th December
Just one match this weekend but a great result. Congratulations to 3rd Grade for winning their one-day competition semi-final against ExServicemens. They now move through to what should be a home final on January 9 against Sussex Inlet.
Batting first ExServicemens set a competitive total of 9 for 135. Tony Dcosta led the bowling attack with a terrific 8 over spell of 3 for 9. In reply Bay reached the target in the 35th over with only 4 wickets down. Tom Purcell top scored with 39 not out of only 25 balls faced and Dcosta completed a great match with a composed 36.
Sailing
A light and patchy breeze led to a slow afternoon of sailing for the Batemans Bay Sailing Club keelboat fleet last Saturday. Only five boats started after "Xanthia" (James Gardiner) was a late scratching when crew members were stuck in Sydney due to the COVID outbreak. Race officer Terry Paton and his trusty crew of Andrew Bain and Roger Rowe ventured forth in the newly remotored committee boat "Clarence the Clocker". It was a handicap start race with the faster boats giving the slower boats a headstart based on past performances.
"Rainbow Runner" (Geoff Scott) got the biggest headstart but needed more breeze to get going. Conditions were more favourable for the S80 "Avior" which soon got into the lead. Because her skipper Peter Paterson was sailing single handed there was no excess crew weight aboard. Next off was the Farr 1020 "Moonmist" (Robin Davey) then the Adams 10.6 sister ships "Wishful Thinking" (Simon Dunlop) and "Accolade" (Lachlan Brown).
"Wishful" got past "Moonmist" on the first work to the Marine Park middle mark. There followed a broad reach to Caseys Beach and a tighter reach back to a laid mark off Square Head. By the bottom mark "Wishful" had reeled in "Rainbow Runner" and was catching up to "Avior". Meanwhile "Accolade" had got through the lee of "Moonmist" under spinnaker and had made up time on "Wishful". The breeze really dropped out on the last work to the finish. It was a challenge to make any headway at all. "Wishful" was first into new breeze on the right hand side of the course and got away again, just pipping "Avior" at the finish, with "Accolade" coming in third several minutes later.

Broulee Runners
Last week's event attracted 11 runners to face the starter in atrocious conditions and 10 others did their ran in similar conditions closer to home. More than 100 millimetres of rain across the coast did not stop the Broulee Runners.
We welcomed Zara Stegbauer and Bec Pearce to their first run with the group. It was also pleasing to see Jason Stegbauer and Alan Andrews back after a long absence.
Bernie Lambert once again improved and 11-year-old Tino Lopresti once again showed his class with a performance just outside his personal best in such wet slippery conditions.

Club Dalmeny Bowls
For a change 28 Monday bowlers welcomed the swirling wind keeping the heat and humidity at bay to be organised by Snoopy Leigh and the lowest winning margin was the game decider those on 1 in Storm Farrell and Steal Hot-Daughter from the runners-up on 2 in Peter Can-Daughter, Towelling Lewis and Tom's son Danny. Punter Alan scored the only resting toucher but the $472 jackpot was not won with the wrong-bias sinners being Storm again and Mick K-Vic. The lucky losing team on rink 10 was Deckhand Ace, the Goose and Pat, Ron or Jim while the raffle prize winners were Mick again, Broker Jim and All Butt Neville.
Only 18 bowlers again played their Thursday bowls in fine conditions with Chef Keith sorting the cards and for a change had the "points" system deciding the winners on 23 points were the Macedonian Illya and the Foot-Sen couple Chris and Finn from the runners- up on 20 points in Pete Rum-back 100, the Goose and gospeller Bob. Dine-back Streamer scored the only resting toucher and the $238 jackpot was not won. The wrong bias sinner of the day was Shark Finn while the raffle well organised by the Brooker lady had winners in Herself, Lois Mac (twice) but gratefully sending it round again for Sailor Brian.
Dreary conditions kept too many twilight bowlers away to create a game so those who rolled up had one. Our next game will be held on New Year's Day starting up we hope more interested players over the age of 12 to join in on Friday nights for 2 hours of fun bowls and the signing on sheet will be on the cupboard under the notice board. Games are played in a pairs format (but single entries accepted) and start at 5.30pm so names need to be on the sheet by 4.30pm in order to help organiser Brett with the cards.
