The woman, 34, from Toowoomba, was swimming with her 11-year-old daughter at First Bay, south of Coolum, when the pair were dragged out.
The daughter made it back to safety but her mother was found a short time later floating in the water.
Coolum Police's Sergeant Ben Cox said it was a tragic start to the school holidays.
"The surfers and paramedics worked on her for about half an hour, but sadly couldn't save her," Sergeant Cox said.
"Her sister was standing on rocks nearby but hadn't realised that she'd been dragged out to sea. It's tragic."
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
