Since the Currowan fire broke out near Nelligen on November 26, we have been living in a state of emergency.
As we enter the third month of this crisis, we welcome the cooler weather and the chance of rain, but the damage is done.
Just as a rain does not instantly solve the problems of famine-struck areas, we face a long road to recovery.
Our resilience has been tested.
Cracks in relationships and systems which predated the fires have only become wider.
We have forged stronger bonds in some cases, but the harm of such a frightening and destructive set of circumstances cannot be underestimated.
It can be tempting to turn on each other - the equivalent of a deep wound becoming infected - but helping each other heal remains our best chance, in whatever form that takes.
Our regional economy has taken a hammering at a time when we most needed a boost.
From a small horse riding school at Malua Bay to a major enterprise such as a club, everyone has taken a hit.
Yes, there have been swings and roundabouts. Some accommodation providers have picked up trade from the very presence of emergency service crews sent from far afield. This trade has flowed onto eateries and other businesses, but nothing to match the typical summer boom economy.
If you know of a individual, family or business doing it tough who needs a hand, please let us know at community.eurobodalla@austcommunitymedia.com.au
We are compiling a list for those generous people who ring wanting to help someone, but do not wish to donate to a charity.
Meanwhile, if you know someone who has gone above and beyond to help others in this crisis, please let us know so we can include them in our Heroes of the Home Front campaign.
It has been Australia's lost summer.
Drought, hail, floods and, worst of all, bushfires have ravaged communities all over the nation.
But the selfless actions of friends, family, neighbours, strangers, local groups and volunteer organisations have inspired us and strengthened the bonds of community.
Please join us in saying thanks to the heroes of the home front by sharing your stories of gratitude on our website.
