Surf life savers have stood down for the time being to allow the police divers to do their work, and are awaiting further instructions from police, Far South Coast SLS duty officer Cheryl McCarthy said.
Friday, 2pm: A multi-agency search is currently underway south of Bermagui with reports of a missing spear fisherman Friday morning.
Around 11am on December 27, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Barragga Bay, around 13km south of Bermagui on the NSW Far South Coast, to assist in the search for a spearfisher.
It was believed he had headed out that morning but did not return as planned.
By 1pm with no sign of the missing diver, the helicopter returned to base.
However, Surf Life Saving personnel, police, ambulance and Marine Rescue personnel are all still on scene conducting a search.
Duty officer with Far South Coast Surf Life Saving Cheryl McCarthy said a couple of IRBs are conducting a search along with personnel on jetskis and a drone is in the sky overhead now the helicopter has departed.
No other information is available as yet.
