Moruya and Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue Fire and Rescue hazmat crews were sent to Preddeys Wharf, Moruya Heads.
A Moruya Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the spill was a "result of a stolen car being recovered from the Moruya River".
The spokesperson said police, marine retrieval and a tow company retrieved the car.
When it was pulled to shore, "large amounts of oil began to leak".
"Authorities called on Fire and Rescue NSW to assist with the clean-up," the spokesperson said.
Firefighters used an absorbent material, Sphag Sorb, and hydrocarbon booms, to soak up oil and stop it from entering the river.
