A council spokeswoman said the collection would be guided by a new art-acquisition policy, currently on public exhibition, which provides a framework for the selection and preservation of artwork for display in council facilities.
The collection will reflect the life and artistic excellence of the Eurobodalla.
"The collection will reflect the life and artistic excellence of the Eurobodalla, and will be built with an acquisitive $5000 prize as part of the Basil Sellers Art Prize and an $8000 budget," she said.
"It will help raise the profile and recognition of local arts practitioners, support the local creative economy, and create a repository of work of renowned artists from the area.
"It is hoped the collection will provide an insightful view of the Eurobodalla's social, geographic, and cultural history and development, and promote creativity in our community."
The community is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft Art Acquisition Policy, available at www.esc.nsw.gov.au/publicexhibition, from Wednesday, February 20, to Wednesday, March 20.
