Angus Knight, 17, Lexus Knight, 15, and Sam Reedy, 15, saved the lives of two swimmers, including one who was found face down in the surf.
“Lex and I were both on duty, and Sam and his brother came down to say hello,” Angus said.
“We were out there swimming, and Lex noticed the two guys pretty far out in distress. She brought it to my attention, and we swam out there.
“One was conscious and screaming for help, and the other was unconscious. I held both of them up while Lexus went for more help.”
Sam Reedy wasn’t technically on duty, but still jumped into action when he saw what was going on.
“I saw Angus and Lexus waving for help, so I ran out to grab the board, chucked my phone at some random bloke and went out,” he said.
“This was the first rescue the three of us had done together, so it was pretty hard on us.
“It’s just a reaction; the adrenaline kicks in, and you just do it. There’s no thinking about it.”
Lexus Knight said the unconscious man was lucky he wasn’t swimming alone.
“I saw it out of the corner of my eye originally,” she said. “One of the men was screaming for help, so it was pretty easy to see what was going on once you noticed it.
“We were all a bit rattled on the day. I think it’s the most serious thing our club has dealt with on our beach.”
