If its big flathead you’re chasing, Moruya River is the place to fish with reports of big girls measuring up to 90-plus centimetres landed this week. Daiwa double clutches in both 75 and 95 mm have been the lure of choice and have proven very successful fishing the shallows towards the front of the system.
Whiting are schooled up on most of the flats on a high tide and many anglers have caught good numbers using bait like live nippers, and surface poppers like the Jackson Pygmy have also worked extremely well.
Bait fisherman drifting the channels are picking up a variety of species including bream, flounder, trevally, and flathead using prawns, blue bait, and tuna fillets.
Tuross River
Some big whiting are being caught at the moment down the front of the system near Potato Point. Bassday Sugapens and Jackson pygmy poppers have been very productive, but baits like worms and nippers are also working very well.
Bream, tailor, and trevally are hanging around in the channel near the boat shed. Baits like prawns and chicken gut have been catching a few.
Flathead are being caught up in the shallows around the four-ways. Soft plastics and deep-diving hard-bodied lures are both working equally well.
Mulloway have been a little slow this week with all the boat traffic, but some are still being boated up around snake flat.
Rocks and Beaches
The break wall and Windsock Beach have been very busy and some nice fish are being caught. Bream and whiting are coming in off the beach on live worms. Salmon, tailor, and a few flathead have been caught off the wall on pillies and gang-hook rigs.
The southern beaches have a few good size gutters and they are reportedly full of large salmon and tailor. Arma metal slices have worked well. Pillies on a surf rig has also produced some quality fish.
South Broulee has seen some good squid coming in off the rocks and some sizeable kingfish have been spotted hanging around.
Offshore
Windsock Beach has been producing the goods when it comes to large sand flathead. The 35-metre mark has been the sweet spot and Lund’s California squid has been the bait of choice.
Two-mile reef (Just off Moruya) has seen some nice snapper and mowie caught. Storm Koika micro jigs are working great and baits like pillies and Lund’s squid also.
School sharks and gummies have been seen hanging around the offshore reefs and around the Broulee area with a few kingfish in patches also.
