Now the two Shoalhaven Tigers are one step closer to achieving that dream, after being invited to training with the Illawarra Hawks – who play in the National Basketball League.
The pair were both individually invited by Hawks coach Rob Beveridge, following strong seasons on the hardwood.
“I was sent an email from Bevo [Rob Beveridge] with an invitation to train with the team during pre-season,” Costain said.
“From there, I’ve was invited back to train with the squad for the rest of the year – it’s been awesome.”
O’Shannessy, who helped the Tigers win the Waratah League division two youth men’s title earlier this year, has enjoyed the challenge of playing against some of the top players in the country.
“It’s been a big adjustment for me, especially having to play in different positions I’m used to, as well as being more comfortable shooting perimeter shots and playing on the perimeter,” O’Shannessy said.
“At the very first practice, Tim Coenraad took me under his wing and showed me the ropes.
“He showed me what to do, making the transition from youth league so much easier – especially having someone keeping an eye on me so to speak.”
Costain, a former St John the Evangelist Catholic High School student, echoed the thoughts of O’Shannessy, saying it’s been surreal being able to play and train alongside guys he’s grown up watching play.
“It’s great being around guys like Kevin White and AJ Ogilvy, who I’ve always enjoyed watching,” Costain said.
“What surprised me the most [about the training] was how intense they train and how much of a faster game is compared to juniors and lower senior leagues – it’s definitely a big step up for me.
“During my time with the Hawks, Bevo has identified he mainly wants me to lose some weight and get better on the defensive end for now.
“Everything is still a work in progress but those are my main two goals for now.”
While both are enjoying every second they are on the court with the Hawks, they appreciate it is even more special to do it alongside one of your best mates.
“Having more people there [at training] that I know, like Gavin, makes it a whole lot easier to get comfortable and find a rhythm,” O’Shannessy said.
“It’s great to be able to share this with him, considering we have grown up playing with and against each other.”
