A large tree on the western side of the highway fell across the highway, crushing the guard rail on the opposite side.
Driver Matt McGovern was hauling cars north and swerved to avoid the main trunk of the tree. He finished with his cabin perched precariously over the bank of the creek and was lucky to escape serious injury.
Fire and Rescue crews from the Far South Coast arrived at about 4.30am on Thursday and worked into the evening to prevent the fuel reaching Brou Lake.
They resumed on Friday morning and hoped to complete the task that day.
Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue team leader Phil Eberle praised all authorities involved in the cleanup.
