Bay & Basin won the toss and elected to bat first, moving the score slowly but confidently to 34 before Andrew “Snowy” Malcolm took a great return catch in the 15th over to dismiss Mark Horsfall (9) for the first wicket.
Wickets then fell regularly to the accurate Batemans Bay bowling attack which was well supported by good ground fielding and a catch by Lachlan Malcolm in the outfield.
Runs were very hard to come by for Bay & Basin’s batsmen and the score was 6/74 after 34 overs before a final wicket partnership of 34 saw some big hitting by Drey Howlett (27) and Rob Marshall (4no) to take the score to 108 when Howlett was clean bowled by promising youngster Malcolm to finish the innings at 7/108 in the 40th over.
The Batemans Bay bowlers rattled the stumps 5 times to prove their accuracy, and wickets were shared between Snowy Malcolm (2/16 off 8 overs), comeback veteran Bruce Dickinson (2/27 off 8), Lachlan Malcolm (2/28 off 7) and Pat Griffin (1/10 off 8).
After tea, it was Batemans Bay’s turn to bat and openers Pat Griffin (Captain) and James Cashin strode to the crease with a target run rate of less than 3 runs per over. Cashin (1) snicked one to the keeper in the 5th over to lose his wicket with the score at 14, and that was the sole wicket of the innings.
Another Batemans Bay teenager, Sean Griffin, then joined his dad at the crease and together they weathered the early pace and bounce of the Bay & Basin bowlers while hitting the gaps and scoring freely to move the score easily to 1/82 at the 20 over mark.
Griffin senior retired hurt at the drinks break after scoring a game high 38 with 4 boundaries. Snowy Malcolm joined the younger Griffin in the middle and both took to the attack immediately to finish the match in the 23rd over, with the score at 1/110.
Sean Griffin finished with a solid 35no, including 2 boundaries and one six over mid wicket, while Malcom hit a quickfire 13no with 2 boundaries at better than a run a ball.
