“We’d just retired, there was nothing going on, you slip further and further down and spend longer and longer on the couch,” Mr Graham said.

Mr Herbert agreed: “We weren’t doing anything, we were just sitting on the couch, we were couch potatoes.”
After discovering an exercise program funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs (which is also available to Medicare clients), the two have benched their lounge-loving ways.
“Our exercise physiologist looks after us really well,” Mr Graham said.
“It helps with arthritic conditions … and for PTSD as well. There’s no one at home kicking you up the bum, but as part of the program, we feel compelled to turn up.”

Mr Herbert said the benefits of exercise were real – and encouraged others to give it a go: “We’re able to do more than most our age. Starting is always the hardest. Just come and have a look.”
