Thousands of people from around the ACT and beyond hit the streets of the nation’s capital this morning to take part in one of the most-loved community events in Canberra.

The Canberra Times Fun Run powered by Salesforce saw more than 4000 people sign up to take part in the 10-kilometre and five-kilometre fun run events, as well as the first ever one-kilometre fun run and five-kilometre Paw Parade.
All course routes allowed participants to take in some of the city’s most iconic sights, including the parliamentary triangle and Lake Burley Griffin.
In the 10km event, Oxley’s Joshua Torley was the first male to cross the line with a time of 31 minutes and 21 seconds. Second place went to Alan Craigie from Lyneham who finished with a time of 31:57, while Braddon local Daniel Green finished in a time of 32:23 to claim third.
Making it a double win for the Torley siblings, Stephanie Torley, sister to Joshua Torley and also from Oxley, claimed the 10km first place for the females with a time of 36:57. Fryans Place’s Chloe Bateup crossed the line in second place with a time of 37:18, and Megan Towill from Waverley, NSW, rounded out the top three with a time of 37:51.
Florey’s Yosef Gemechu won the men’s 5km event in 14 minutes and 19 seconds ahead of Lawson’s Luke Simson (15:41) and Calwell’s Sean Hancock (16:18).
Melinda Witchard was the first female to cross the finish line in the 5km event with a time of 17:04, followed by Capella Maguire in second with a time of 18:26. Kim Wilmshurst came in third in 18:45.
This morning’s event also saw Joe Whithear from Bruce cross the line first in the one-kilometre event, finishing with a time of 03:01.
For the first time ever, the Canberra Times Fun Run introduced a five-kilometre ‘Paw Parade’, where participants were invited to take part with their dogs. Puppy ambassadors Rupert and Finn were seen with their fur mumma Lea Rachel amongst the hundred ‘Paw Parade’ participants.
Fairfax Event and Entertainment event manager Melanie Stewart said the day was a fun event supported by thousands of athletes and spectators.
“It’s so insoiring to see everyone who has taken part, all the supporters cheering on the sidelines, and everyone who has helped to raise money for the Heart Foundation and all the important work they do,” she said.
The Canberra Times Fun Runhas already raised more than $8000 so far for the Heart Foundation, with the total expected to increase over the next four weeks.
