Batemans Bay basketballers have taken their talents to Sydney and shown the state just what they can do.
The Under 16 Women’s Batemans Bay Breakers basketball team attended the State Cup on August 11 and 12 – and came home runners up after a closely fought grand final against Manly.
The cup was played at Minto Basketball Stadium and consisted of the top eight teams from Division 1 in the Waratah League in NSW.
“Our U16G won the Southern Junior League Division1 against Albury to attend the State Cup after coming second on the ladder,” spokeswoman Marnie Crabb said.
“The girls played against Sydney Comets, losing in the last seconds by four points. We then played Blue Mountain Magic, winning by 9 points 54-45. Both games were fast and physical.
“Winning against Byron Beez secured us a place in the Grand Final against Manly Sea Eagles on a countback by five points,” Ms Crabb said.
“The girls put it too them and came out strong for the first 30 minutes, playing a fast and skillful game. Our fast breaks and outside shooting had Manly bamboozled.”
However, Manly came out in the last quarter too strong and too tall, winning by 10 points, 63-53.
For our girls to make the State Cup and the grand final is a huge achievementMarnie Crabb
Ms Crabb said the effort was a landmark and has not come easily.
“For our girls to make the State Cup and make the Grand Final is a huge achievement and a credit to themselves, their families and Batemans Bay Basketball Association,” she said.
“This is the result of their hard work over the past few years and what you can achieve through dedication and team work.”
